‘The Testaments’ On Hulu: What We Know About ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Spinoff Series

The epic Hulu and MGM original series—The Handmaid’s Tale—just wrapped its fourth season and viewers are eager to find out about the future of some of the show’s prominent characters. What we do know about The Testaments spinoff series, which began development back in 2019 before Margaret Atwood‘s follow-up book had even hit bookshelves yet.

At the time, Atwood said she supplied showrunner Bruce Miller and his team with “a whole new whiteboard and a bunch of new characters.”

“The story of the characters in the show at the moment is left open, so it’s up to Bruce and the highly competent writing team as to how they get those people into position,” she added, claiming that the information is now  “in the locked writers’ room that nobody’s allowed into — including me.”

What we do know is that The Testaments picks up more than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale.

While there will be a fifth and final season of the pioneer show, it doesn’t appear that will necessarily be the end for the Aunt Lydia character.

EW recently confirmed that MGM and Hulu have been developing The Testaments and it would feature the Aunt Lydia character.

Ann Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia on The Handmaid’s Tale, said during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that the prospect of playing the character again “feels fantastic.”

“And the other thing I have, and I’m just going to say it right now, I thought to myself I hope they’re going to let me play her,” Dowd said. “The problem is that if they don’t, the actress who would have been chosen should watch her back because I would hunt her until she gives it up.”

While there is not yet a release date for The Testaments on Hulu and we don’t know how involved Elisabeth Moss will be with the forthcoming show, stay tuned as Decider is sure to keep you posted.
