R.L. Stine is heading to Netflix — three times in a row. The platform announced today that Leigh Janiak‘s adaptation of the Fear Street trilogy will be released as one major summer movie saga. All three feature-length films will be released over the course of three weeks in July, so get ready for campy horror galore.
Fear Street takes place over a handful of decades, opening in 1994 and spanning over several decades (centuries, actually). The films are set to follow a handful of teenagers investigating a series of horrifying events that have haunted them for generations, realizing that all of the events must be connected. The films will be based on Stine’s best-sellers in Shadyside, which he started publishing in 1989.
Fear Street Part 1: 1994, the first in the saga, will be released to Netflix on July 2. A week later, Fear Street Part 2: 1978 will drop on July 9. Rounding out the saga will be Fear Street Part 3: 1666 (a 300-year time jump!), premiering on July 16.
“We filmed all three Fear Street movies over one crazy, bloody summer,” said director Janiak in a statement. “It’s a dream that audiences now get to experience the story in the same way – back to back to back, with only a week of waiting in between. I can’t wait to welcome everyone into the world of Fear Street in 1994, 1978 and 1666!”
Each film will introduce a new slew of characters, as well as bring back some recurring faces. The cast of Fear Street Part 1 includes Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Behamin Flores Jr., Maya Hawke, and Ashley Zukerman. Fear Street Part 2 cast includes Sadie Sink, Emily Rud, Ryan Simpkins, Gillian Jacobs, and a handful of the Part 1 folks. The final installment, Fear Street Part 3, will bring back most of the casts from both the first and second chapters of the saga.
“Fear Street fans are in for a treat – and some major surprises,” original author Stine said of the series in a statement. “Readers know that the book series is rated PG. But the movies are rated R. That means a lot more thrills – and a lot more terror! I have seen Leigh Janiak’s epic trilogy releasing on Netflix in July and I can tell you the scares and the SCREAMS are more than I ever expected. What fun to see the horrors of Shadyside come to life!”
